When I was hungry – facts

  1. Half the world lives on less than $2 a day. One on four lives on less than a $1 a day. The cost of food consumes 50-80% of this daily income for the 3 billion living in extreme poverty.

  3. More than 153 million of the world’s malnourished people are children under the age of 5.
  4. Half of all children under five years of age in South Asia and one third of those in sub-Saharan Africa are malnourished.
  5. Six million children under the age of 5 die every year as a result of hunger.

6. While every country in the world has the potential of growing enough food to feed itself, 54 nations currently do not produce enough food to feed their populations, nor can they afford to import the necessary commodities to make up the gap. Most of these countries are in sub-Saharan Africa.

That is enough children to go three times around the world at the equator.

2. If you had these orphans hold hands in a line, you would see over 1,700 orphans per mile.  If you were to follow that line of Orphans holding hands, driving 60 mph, you could drive 24 hours a day seeing 1,700 orphans every mile, hour after hour, day after day without stopping for over two months, and you would still see orphans holding hands.

  5. Without AIDS, the total number of orphans in sub-Saharan Africa would have declined between 1990 and 2010. AIDS, however, will push the number of orphans in the region from 9 million to more than 10 million by 2010.
  6. Orphaned children are much more likely than non-orphans to be working in commercial agriculture, as street vendors, in domestic service and in the sex trade.
  7. Orphans are more vulnerable and at risk of becoming victims of violence, exploitation, trafficking, discrimination, or other abuses.
