Stand Up!
This weekend is time to Stand-up and take action toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The eight MDG goals include:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria, and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
Since its upon us, my ‘events’ will be web-related. :)
So join me in virtually standing up for eradicating poverty and hunger. Whatever it takes. There should be no poor among us. It is not the way it was meant to be. There should be no one who goes to bed hungry. And yet a billion people will tonight. Most are children. Whatever it takes, let’s stand up against this injustice!
One way I am standing is through Sekepe. This month, we invested a little under $1000 to invest in two businesses that have been / will be launched by South African women living in extreme poverty. One is a business is Batho Thusanang Cleaning Service which was created by a woman living in poverty. She had no job and took it upon herself to offer her services to clean trash bins. She had started on her own and saved a little money. But the chemicals in the cleaning supplies she purchased ate through the containers she had them stored in. She we are loaning her money to buy proper supplies and launch a full business. She already has contracts with businesses and schools in the community and has hired 10 other employed young people to work for her.
Some will say this is too small to make a difference. (A well-meaning person said as much in an email this am.) I say nonsense. If we can help one person – one women who no longer wants to see her kids go to bed hungry – launch out on their own, we can make a difference. One lady like this can help others and give hope where there is little. One person at a time lets eradicate extreme poverty.

There are many great opportunties out there to invest time or money in helping eradicate poverty and hunger so if you don’t invest in Sekepe, I would encourage you to invest somewhere. Maybe we can give up one meal this weekend and use the money saved to help fight poverty and hunger. Let’s do something this weekend!
